It is appropriate that in a city so attached to Mount Fuji that a skyscraper is constructed that takes its graceful sloping form. When viewed from the side, the headquarters of Sompo Japan flares out at the bottom much like the old Atari logo, which was inspired by the beloved mountain in the distance. Though it is said that the building gets its shape from traditional Japanese fortresses, the fact cannot be ignored that this building is nearly identical to earlier skyscrapers by other architects in Chicago and New York. But that certainly doesn't diminish the Tokyo building's impact on the Shinjuku neighborhood. It's alignment and location allow it to catch the sun often and display itself to many neighboring buildings. This is a high-profile pile.
