Many cities use their opera houses as showcases of modern or classic architecture. Tokyo is one of a handful of cities whose opera house is in a skyscraper. In fact, there are three concert halls inside Tokyo Opera City along with other museums, art galleries, restaurants, and of course, offices. The building is an octagon with four sides shorter then the others. Those sides are faced with glass, while the main sides have a white facade with uniform rows and columns of small windows, like several other buildings in the area. The effect is to make the white sides look like they've pulled back or peeled away from the main building revealing the glass corners underneath. The singularity of the glass facades make them seem like a uniform shaft from the ground into the sky, emphasizing the sense of height. It also makes the white facades seem thinner and more delicate like sheets of perforated paper rising into the air.
