The glitziest intersection in Tokyo's most fashionable shopping district is anchored by the venerable Ginza Wako building. Unlike its glass and neon neighbors, this building presents a dignified presence to shoppers and tourists crowding the Ginza corridor. Its wide curved base is intensely illuminated at night making it a blazing white beacon in the darkness that outshines the Johnny-come-lately department stores and boutiques with which it competes. The building's architecture lets people know that it has been around for a long time and will continue to dominate this corner in the future.

This building started out as Hattori, a horology shop, in the late 1800's. In fact, the clock on the building now was first installed in the Hattori clock tower in 1894. Hattori would go on to become what we now know as Seiko, and the original building would be flattened in the great earthquake of 1923. Out of the rubble of that earthquake rose the current building.

Remarkably, the Ginza Wako building survived the ravages of World War II and after the war was commandeered by the American forces for use as their headquarters during the American occupation of Japan. Today, the building is once again the bustling hub of a sprawling retailing neighborhood that attracts millions of people and billions of dollars each year.

This is the same building that Gen Ridgeway's headquarters were housed during the Korean War. I remember it as the Dai Ichi Building. I was stationed there with the 96th MRU Unit of the JLC cvommand.

I was stationed in the Dai Ichi Building along with Gen Ridgeways's honor guard from March17,1952 until October 15, 1952. At that time there used to be a Hama Park not too far from the building. They were still using coal burning cars for transportation.(Gas was at a premium then in Tokyo.) The Ginza was a great shopping area then, and I enjoyed going to the Ginza market and bargaining with the merchants.Tokyo was still getting over WW2, and things were a little hard to get. The Beer was great, but in Quart bottles, a little hard to get down at a sitting. We had a 24 hour cafeteria in the Dai Ichi building because of the nature of the work the unit I was in. (96th MRU). We were processing Mia's, Kia's and discharges as we we were an IBM unit. One of our sister units got overrun in Korea by the North Koreans and Chinese troops. We had three 8 hour shifts working during this period, hence the 24 hour Cafeteria. We had civilians working as IBM repairmen, mostly on the day shift. I got to know a couple of them and they were teaching me Japanese, and I was teaching them English. Thank you for the opportunity to express myself.
